Beijing DongFang Hotel, located in the Central Square of the New Downtown in Xiangchang which was the most flourishing in Beijing in the beginning period of the Republic of China, was opened on Feb. 19, 1918. Splendid and famous at one time, DongFang Hotel, in which many historical celebrities left their tracks, witnessed many important historic events such as May Fourth New Cultural Movement and Northern Expedition Revolution. The building structure and the handrails of the stairs and balconies are all original from 1918. At that time, there were large washrooms, electric lamps, motor fans, heaters and hot water for showers in the rooms of the hotel, and every room had its own telephone, which was the first in China then. Moreover, the hotel had 7 cars for guests for free. It is the first private upper-scale hotel in China.
